On the way to Franz Josef we stopped off at the Fox Glacier. After a quick 5 min walk to see the tip of it Kerry did a U-turn and headed back to the car to escape the rain! Despite this, John somehow managed to talk Kerry into booking a climb up the Franz Josef glacier the next day. In preparation for the climb we found a good pub and watched the Ashes. Yep, we all know what happened in that series so the less said about the cricket the better! The next day it was pouring with rain when we set off on our climb - you can imagine Kerry's face! What was even funnier was her reaction when we put on the crampons and set up off the ice - dog on ice springs to mind!! Kerry was all over the place and was convinced she was going to fall down a crevice and be frozen in the glacier for millions of years! John's SAS training (his words!!) helped him confidently bombard his way up the ice. The views of the glacier from the top were well worth the effort of climbing/slipping/crawling up there. We got a few snap-shots of us with the pick-axe at the top, not that we needed it seeing as though there were steps carved in to the ice for tourists. On the way down John was slightly hindered by Kerry clinging to him but both of us eventually made it safely back to the bottom! After our icy experience on the glacier we carried on further north, not before a slight detour though when Kerry realised she had left the camera (with all our photos of New Zealand) back in Franz Josef! Eventually with all our belonging we went to Hokitika in preparation for our stay on a farm.
