Jonny- The train ride from Sydney to Katoomba was straightforward and on time (although it's the first time I can remember my ears popping on a train, and we're only talking about a local commuter-type train here - not especially fast, and not a mountain track railway either).

This is more than could be said for our (second) attempt to confirm our East Coast Rail Pass bookings, and convert our vouchers into actual tickets, which we did earlier in the day. Bearing in mind we'd already registered and paid for our tickets, and reserved seats for nearly all our travel, we were still in the office for an hour and fifteen minutes before it eventually all worked (across three different computer systems, apparently). 'Nuff said.

Anyway, Katoomba, while steep (the Blue Mountains are actually canyons, so the civilised areas are constructed on the ridges) and chilly (being a kilometre up will do that) did at least have a fruit & veg shop and an actual butcher, so we ate some nice, fresh, (hopefully) local stuff for dinner. We also managed to get our hair cut, me for an average price and Hannah fairly cheaply, by our usual standards.
