Where I stayed
our new apartment
Well its been a while since we have updated because after returning from the Bay of Plenty we had to deal with the fact that money was tight and like all good working holidays the time has come to actually wotk.
So hostels in New Zealand are really nice but when staying somewhere for a longer term not that affordable. I think if you are staying somewhere here even for a month best to look at long term options (which many hotels offer). We decided to loook for an apartment and coincidently a brand new building had opened next to the hotel we stayed in. So we are now living in a brand new fully furnished apartment with a gym, steam room and pool for about 150 dollars a week cheaper than a hostel, not bad for a couple of backpackers
We decided to apply for some backpacker jobs and both started working for a charity doing fundraising door to door. Now I think if you still have money these jobs are ok for a few extra dollars. But if you need the money coming in dont even be sucked in by these marketing backpackers wanted type jobs. From what I saw I believe they have a weekly turnover of staff, making the company rich but not the people doing all the hard work. We met lots of interesting people doing door to door but when a full weeks work only paid us 240 New Zealand dollars we decided it wasnt worth the time. That was our pay together by the way!!!
So I then applied for some hospitality jobs and are now working in a cafe which seems to be ok so far. Tim is still looking but has made good progress in the week we have been looking and had an interview on Monday. I think people that came to New Zealand on working holidays need to realise what a crappy state the economy here is in. Lots of Kiwis are out of work so apart from really low paid fruit picking jobs there isnt much to go around. Also as they really rely on tourists as one of the main sources of income do not expect cheap prices or much for free. Even the public libraries in tourist towns charge for internet!!!!
So will keep you updated as we explore the Auckland area. Hopefully soon once we have topped up the bank we can go north the the Bay of Islands for a few days.
By the way I am beginning to wonder on the intellectual state of the people here. There are so many strange ad campaigns like the drink and driving and wearing helmets and all that. But one that really made me wonder the other day was a "dont drink and fry" ad, warning people about the dangers of fires when cooking. Hmmmm.... maybe too much fresh air isnt a good thing. I find it to be totally patronising and if its necessary then it concerns me about peoples intellects here : ) I still dont think it beats the Aussie ad "dont drink and sleep on the road" ; )
