Where I stayed

Hi there,

So apparently Tim has informed me that my blog entry wasnt detailed enough yesterday about Rotorua and what we saw there so here goes........Rotorua is a city on a huge lake which like all the lakes there I assume has been formed by a volcanic eruption or is a volcanic crater. The city itself isnt that beautiful despite being the beautiful city of NZ winner 5 times in the last 10 years. All the buildings look as though they could do with a good paint and its winning title has made us curious as to what other NZ cities look like if this is the nicest ; )) As the city is surrounded with thermal areas it really does stink of Sulphur and that lovely rotten egg/freshly permed hair smell.

They have so many tourists here but ultimately the attractions are a all a little outside of the city and you probably need your own car for flexibilty. As we are on a budget and we found a lot of the attractions quite expensive we decided to go to one thermal area which was the  most colourful and had a geyser. It was called Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland and was amazing. We saw it all, bubbling mud, huge steaming craters, lake full of minerals that make the most amazing colours and the beautiful Champagne Pool which was amazing. We are definiely glad we chose that one as you have to see the colours to believe them! The geyser was a little disappointing, only as it requires a guide throwing in a handful of soap to get it started! We did discuss before going just how it went off at exactly 10.15 every day. Apparently if left to its own devices it would go off every 24 to 36 hours depending on water levels. It was discovered by some prisoners who bathed in the hot springs there, one time they were using soap and up went the water, taking their clothes with it! They put rocks around the edge to make it shoot higher and thats that. So it was nice but as the Pom said that was sitting next to us "just a little bit Disney"

Other things you can do in Rotorua are other hot springs and thermal areas, craters, a buried village from a huge eruption (sort of like pompeii), maori shows and hangis and rafting and zorbing.

Something we really liked in Rotorua was a city park with heaps of bubbling mud and steaming pools. The best thing is its free and really nicely manicured, the downside is it really really smells!

We watched the zorbing which is basically getting in a huge ball and rolling down quite a small hill. I believe it may be the most overrated "extreme" sport in NZ.  You can get strapped in a roll down turning over and over but most people opt for a ball filled with a bit of water, then you dont turn over and over just slide down like a waterslide.

So hope this satisfies Tim and is enough info for everyone. We are now back in Auckland staying in the hotel we stayed in last time and we have our first job interviews tomorrow. Today we also both got offered jobs at Greenpeace so that sounds good too!! Time will tell how things go.

Bye for now xx
