With Julia, one of my best friends, I went to New York in October 2005. The biggest problem was the weather, one week only rain (rather a one week cloudburst), that makes a sightseeing-tour horrible. We even were not able to go by ship to the Statue of Liberty. After two days of shopping and sightseeing we decided that it makes no sence to continue walking or respectiveley swimming through New York, so we visited some shopping malls. Brands like Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren were not much cheaper than in Germany. The last day we had more luck, weather became better, so we made a trip to Long Island which was really beautiful. We went there some days before Helloween, so we saw pumpkins everywhere. In Montauk we made longer stop and took a walk on the beach near the lighthouse, it was beautiful and in the evening I had the best lobster ever; it was so good that I even had two for dinner.
Of course New York is an amazing city, but not one of my favourite. Perhaps I heard to much and read to much about it, so I knew to much and perhaps expected to much. The day on Long Island I enjoyed more than the days in the city.

Montauk in Literature (reply) Jun 26, 2007 19:58 EST by gremlin
Tilman:
'Montauk' is the title of a short novel by Max Frisch, Frankfurt 1975. It is generally believed that some of its contents reflect the author's affair with Ingeborg Bachmann. You were hiking on literary ground.
