My wake up call was requested for 5am, which I received ´with bells on´! not only did the phone ring several times in the half hour running up to 5am, that was then followed by a lot of shouting outside and then Mr Hotel Santiago himself came knocking on my door dead on 5, telling me it ´really´ was time to get up or I´d be late (reminds me of being back home - hi mum!).
So, back at el aeropuerto (although this time the domestic terminal) after checking in I attempted to purchase myself some brekkie... however not sure you can call some dry toact and what appeared to be sweet scrambled omelette much of a humger stopper... and it was an American diner (minus the yanks thank god!)! Anyway, after taking my Spanish only speaking flight (surely there is some security issues with not doing the saftey demo in English? *Just to note since I wrote this entry originally I had a much bigger lack of safety experience - on the way back from Puerto Ordaz they didn´t even announce that we were landing - I just thought we were about to crash land or something as there was a lot of turbulence followed by some engine cutting sounds... and at this point I was unbuckled and sprawled across 2 seats whilst my table was open and I was scribbling in my notebook... I got a bit scared to say the least and then found out that we had just landed already.... totally oblivious!*) Anyway back to the story: My flight landed in Puerto Ordaz on time. Then I ran into problemo numero 1!: My flight to Canaima (where i´m hoping to do a tour of Angel Falls) is cancelled! Ok, so I don´t panic just yet.... instead somehow (with great difficulty as my Spanish is really really bad and that´s what I keep telling people! Or evil if you interpret what I have been saying to people for the last 2 days ... "mal" apparently means evil but "malo" is bad - someone decides to eventually tell me this!).... do I keep going off on a tangent or what? Where was I? Oh yeah.... re: "instead somehow" I manage to negotiate myself onto another flight with another airline.... be it Mr Jimbo and his Jetset (do you remember that?) airlines! I don´t have a ticket I just have an orange sticker attached to my chest..... and I´m starting to feel like they should have put me through xray with the rest of my luggage! Anyway, a tad worried, i decide to go and find out what is going on (I just saw a plane belonging to the originaly airline I was booked with, take off!), but no one speaks any English (anyone would think I´m in another country or something ;)!) after the departure gates. Nor did they know anything about my flight... at all. So as a last resort I had to barge my way back through security, the wrong way and becos it always happens to me, I set the alarms off! Mr Policeman was very nice after taking me to one side and telling me off... I did make it to Canaima in the end....
Where I stayed:
Santiago Hotel

Its great to see airport security is tight the world over, I don't think!!
But if you're going around telling everyone 'spanish is evil' you should really be expecting trouble.
