Tuk Tuks and bargaining fever
Entry 67 of 73 | show all | print this entry |
After a near relaxed flight (the major pocket we hit 50 kilometres outside of Bangkok sending the airhostess flying through the plane was the main factor of a near relaxed flight, other than that Cathay Pacific was very good and offered quality service), we arrived in the crazy city of Bangkok. We simply jumped in a taxi to our hostel as it was the easiest thing to do rather than faff around with our bags in a bus, plus when arriving to the hostel, we found out we were a bit out of the center.
Asha's Guesthouse is good, especially for the price - it's sooo cheap and theres a really nice restaurant attached to it and again cheap!
Bangkok is an amazing city but crazy! Though the only negative bit is the touts and people who try to scam you. The first five minutes of setting foot into a tuk tuk, the guy tried to take us into one of those gem scam stores.... luckily we knew better and refused. Then there's touts in all the touristy things but the best thing is to ignore them or as I fuond out, speak Spanish or French to them - they soon leave you alone!
Trying to get to the city from our place we thought was a bit of a faff. Yesterday we had to take a tuk tuk to the sky train station, then the skytrain, then a boat up the canal. But we soon found out today, a taxi is easier and cheaper! woops!
We haven't done much as we're in Bangkok a few times during this trip but we did go to the grand Palace, which was amazing to see, we also saw there the emerald buddha (and there were real diamonds everywhere!). We also went to Wat Pho, home to the famous reclining buddha - now that was impressive.
Basically thats it - we did go today to Khao San road where all the backpackers live and did some hard haggling for new clothes - after 6 months in the same clothes, it was worth getting some cheap new ones! Though it was spot the typical crusty backpacker with dreadlocks in their hair down there...
We're leaving Bangkok tomorrow for Koh Samui by 2nd class sleeper train, will see how that goes!
Ps: food is brill here! hmmmmm
