After getting lost (again!) and went in a complete square, we finally got on the road towards the beautiful Catlins passing by a petrified forest at Curio Bay
and sitting by the beach hoping to see Hector Dolphins at Porpoise Bay - both beautiful places, though the petrified forest was pretty cool to look at.
We did get slightly lost again as we took, I think, a shortcut to the hostel, but we were faced by cows on this small gravily track... not only were there loads of them (at least 50), they were with their calves, so turned swiftly back so we didnt annoy them too much! Ooof lucky escape!
Our hostel was in a lovely countryside setting, on a farm with lovely views over the hills. The place was just so nice, we even had a free egg in the morning for breakfast, but the lady was extra nice as we were supposed to be in a shared but as she wasnt taking anymore people in, she put us in the fantasticly comfortable double room, sooo nice and for once we were in luck with a hostel...
Though the odd thing was, we were in the remotest of places and we were the only english speaking guests there, the rest were all German, how random!
Anyhhooosss we dumped our stuff and went off exploring via Purakanui falls just down the road
up to Nugget point and Roaring Bay where we went yellow eyed penguin spoting, the rarest in the world.
And after 40 minutes of waiting patiently, we saw 2: one waddling down the hill and go so scared waddled back up, then another one coming out of the sea after a hard day's fishing, soooo cool to watch!
The following day we set off to our next stop via Surat Bay -
now that was just such a fab stop as you walk on the beach and there are about 20 sea lions there playing or lying around.
Though... it was mating season so you had to watch out and we did get chased a bit by one of the sea lions as we must have walked that little tooo far and there must have been a pup nearby - o well part of the fun I suppose!
Nature at it's best!
