Trip Start Aug 20, 2005
23Trip End Ongoing
10/3 Monday We left Mesa Verde after phoning ahead to the Grand Canyon for reservations. Our original plan needed to be altered because the North Rim was completely booked for the 4th. The Kaibab National Forest at Jacob Lake will fill in.
Four Corners (WY,CO, AZ, UT) is on an Indian Reservation and was just about 30 minutes down the road so of course, we stopped. It was very windy but we managed to get some pictures and did a little souvenir shopping from the Indian booths set up there. We had to pay $3.00/person but we thought it was worth it.
The next stop was Monument Valley where John Wayne made some of his movies. This one was not "right on the way" and we had to drive about an extra 25 miles onto the Reservation. We passed some very poor Indian reservation gov't housing and found it interesting that many of them have built round dwellings beside the house or mobile home. Some were covered in mud stucco, others siding. This time we were charged $5.00/each to get in and then the 17 mile road was unpaved. We were not about to disconnect the car to drive on 17 miles of rough dirt roads to see more buttes so we changed our plan of staying the night there at the Mitten Campground. There was no shade in the whole campground and no other campers yet. It was terribly windy and John made the comment that he didn't want to "shake and bake" at this place all by ourselves. We did not feel good at this place, almost like there was an evil spirit so we took a few pics and continued on to the next big city - Page.
The Page campground was nice. As soon as we set up we went into their hot tub and I did a couple loads of laundry preparing for a week without electricity.
