Hi people!
Wow, a lot of you have been on here, but not nearly enough are
replying! Come on, I want to test if you are actually paying attention!
Well, we are now in Interlaken, Switzerland and are enjoying the
beautiful,
if rainy scenery but I will update you this tomorrow when I have some
more photos! We left Paris early in the morning yesterday and
arrived in Lyon by the afternoon. Apparently Lyon is meant to be the
gastronmical centre of the world with more restaurants per square mile
than any other country. It is also a famed UNESCO World
Heritage
site for it's quaint charm and architecture, but for some reason we
couldn't get past the rainy weather and weird vibe of the city. It is a
place at odds with itself; the new glass fronted buildings sit
uncomfortably alongside ancient cathedrals, the metro system is super
swish and feels like something out of Total Recall, but it is poorly
designed and laid out. The restaurants cover the city, but they all
serve the same offal heavy grub and it is hard to find anywhere that
caters for fussy eaters like me. The Hotel de Bretagne (Britain Hotel)
we stayed in was grotty, smoky and unfriendly, and rather ironically,
the
guy who ran the place could speak no word of English. The famous
Basilica Notre Dame cathedral on top of the hill overlooking the town
was
beautiful, but was somewhat marred by the rain. We visited the house of
the Lumiere brothers, that's right, those men that invented the
Kinetoscope I've been learning about for the last 3 years! Couldn't
understand what was being said in any of the cinema screens or
exhibitions, but it was nice to know that I had visited where it had
all began! However, I spent the
evening ill and not really sleeping, so I guess this has tainted my
view of Lyon. It was alright though, we only stayed there as a stop gap
to Switzerland.
The train journey from Lyon to Interlaken was long but comfortable and
we got speaking to a couple from New York and discussed the differences
between the US and England. The beauty about travelling is how you can
just start speaking to people; there is no holds barred, you can just
approach fellow travellers, have a conversation and start learning
about their cultures and experiences. It's great!
Anyway, I'm just waiting for my washing to dry as this is a rather
ingenous launderette/internet cafe so you can surf the web and dry your
smalls at the same time. I must go now as the scary Hitler like man
controlling the cafe is barking for us to give him 5 swiss francs.
Love to you all,
