When I came to Nauplion on excursion with the students last month, I was still down with the Fatal Egyptian Bronchitis. Nauplion is one of the most beautiful towns on the Greek mainland, and I missed it entirely after I collapsed into my hotel bed at 4:00 in the afternoon. So it was very special to me to be able to return to Nauplion healthy and able to see everything I missed before and more.

We drove up to a central lookout point, where we could see the town below us with its stronghold built in the water of the harbor, and the citadel above us in the rain-filled clouds. Even with the weather, this kind of beauty fills my happy tank.

Papou dropped us off near the central square of the town, and we walked down gorgeous bougainvillea-lined streets until we found a taverna for lunch. I had a savory crepe and Godiva ordered a hamburger. She was expecting a patty of ground beef. What she got was a veggie burger with a slice of ham on it. It made perfect sense to the Greeks: ham, burger.
