I asked Godiva what was on her "must do" list for today, and she shrugged and said, "I like walking around looking at things. I don't much care what the things are." So I decided that walking around looking at things in the Benaki and Cycladic Art museums would fit the bill. Plus, getting there on foot would take us past the major monuments in the neighborhood.
Indy once said, "All the real estate in Athens is on an incline." So we went up and down hills all day. Our first downhill trek was down the Stairs of Death , a long stairway that has featured prominently in my memories: Dragging ourselves up the stairs on the second walking tour of orientation week. Traveling Pants and Wedding Belle learning to count to ten in Greek as we stopped at the end of every flight so a very sick Scout could gather her stomach. Gramma exclaiming at the porches overlooking the stairway
At the base of the staircase is the Kalimarmara Stadium, and then we went through the National Gardens planted by Queen Amalia and King Otto. We ate lunch at the Zappeion taverna beside the National Gardens, and Godiva got some nice pictures of the Zappeion fountains.
We had to head back home in the afternoon to prepare our dishes for Thanksgiving dinner. Little did we know NOTHING could prepare us for Thanksgiving dinner Greek style!
Notice anything? We never did make it to the Benaki or Cycladic museums. Oh well. We got lots of walking around and looking at things done on later days of Godiva's visit. Just not Cycladic things.

From Athens, Ohio to Athens, Greece: Jeff Hill
. And now, Godiva pointed out a connection I hadn't considered before. In our undergraduate days at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, there was a similar long, steep staircase up Jefferson Hill. We went from the hills of Athens, Ohio, fourteen years ago when we met to the hills of Athens, Greece. At the base of the staircase is the Kalimarmara Stadium, and then we went through the National Gardens planted by Queen Amalia and King Otto. We ate lunch at the Zappeion taverna beside the National Gardens, and Godiva got some nice pictures of the Zappeion fountains.
