We arrived in Delphi and immediately explored the lower half of the ruins. Indy told us that although this entire area was sacred to Apollo, Athena Pronoia (the Athena of Foresight) had her own sanctuary here because in this location Apollo was said to have killed the dragon Pytho, and Athena helped. There was also an athletic track from the Pythian Games (remember the Olympic games and the Isthmian games? The Pythian games at Delphi were in that same competition circuit), and our guys reran their sprint. This time Red, who came in second last time, triumphed. Jane was philosophical about losing his chance to be the Panhellenic champion.
Then we checked into the Hotel Acropoli, a darling little place with nice rooms. I opened the glass doors of my room to see a gigantic vista of green mountains, a cultivated valley, and a small town in the misty distance beside the water. Wow.
I conducted both persuasion and rhetorical criticism classes in the breakfast room of the hotel, which worked out better than it sounds. Beautiful Basil was our program representative for this trip, and she sat in on both classes as our guest. I was especially proud of Groom, Disney, Blink Blink, and Chopper, who led excellent peer facilitations and really showed off to Basil what they've been learning.
Later we all hoofed it together to the taverna for the last dinner I am hosting out of the program entertainment fund. The rain was dumping in buckets by the time we headed back to the hotel. It's now past the end of the tourist season, so there were no disco clubs were open for the students. I was secretly relieved about that because they all stayed in and watched movies and I got to spend some more time hanging out. I sat with a group of students watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding in the hotel lobby. The movie was in English with Greek subtitles -- how surreal is that when you're watching a movie about Greek people while you're in Greece.
