It was only a short drive this morning from Nauplion to the ancient ruins of Tyrins. We had more silver light today thanks to the overcast skies, and it was downright chilly. Grizz waxed eloquent on how the taste of the air in the morning reminded her of all the things she was missing: apple cider, bonfires, flame-red leaves falling to the ground. Although we didn't have flame-red leaves, we did have orange groves. The orange trees grew right up to the walls of the ancient Tyrins site.
Indy described the excavation of Tyrins by Heinrich Schleimann during the sloppy old days of archaeology, but at least Schleimann had the fortune to bankroll the razing of the Byzantine church that otherwise would have obscured the ancient site. Our favorite part was the storage gallery for a corbel roof. The dramatic hallway would have lead to chambers where oil and grain were stored.
Then Indy revealed that he himself had been here doing archaeological digs from 1982 to 1985. He told us that he was the mapmaker during the dig, and he had to map out a well they found that went down so far he was afraid to descend to the bottom of it once they hit bedrock.
I feel today as if a heavy curtain has been lifted off my body. Every day I've felt healthier and healthier, and after last night's loooong sleep, I woke up today feeling back to 100%! The bounce in my personality is coming back!
