My friends the BibFem Four arrived this morning from Chicago. All five of us are staying in my apartment for the next ten days, and this place which is usually crypt-quiet is now full of life and action (and vegetables).

I know Dutch best, because she, Aletheia, and I have been conducting a three-hour-long Bible study every week by conference call for at least five years now [the Bible study is on hiatus while I'm in Greece, although Dutch and Aletheia have continued to talk on the phone weekly]. Dutch likes to cook, so she brought lots of recipes for yummy Greek dishes to attempt in my kitchen. She made me buy the vegetables. :-)

I am requiring Chaplain to begin every paragraph she speaks with the words, "One time in Congo..." because she spent fifteen years of her life in the African country with her missionary parents, and she has some amazing stories about everyday life in Congo Nurse Cubby, Chaplain, Gramma, and Dutch

Nurse Cubby is just what she sounds like... a manager of nurses at an elite rehabilitation hospital in Chicago, where she loves to root for the Cubs baseball team. She also loves her two tiny chihuahuas, Clark and Addison (the names of the dogs are a test to see whether or not you're a true fan, too).

Gramma is the most gifted practitioner of active listening I've ever met. She has a natural skill for putting your emotions into words and reflecting them back to you with validation. She's a right-brained free spirit with two bionic knees who likes to tell stories about her five grandchildren.

I really enjoy interacting with the students and seeing more of their world than they would've granted a professor access to in the States, but they're at a different stage of life than I am, and that's left me hungry for a different kind of conversation. When my BibFem Four friends arrived at my apartment in Athens, they immediately hit the spot with their special brand of maturity, wisdom, interests, honesty, and humor. Gramma announced, "Your people are here."

Your people shall be my people, Ruth 1:16
Dear Tiara316,
What a wonderful surprise to read your warm birthday greetings to me! Thank you! That blog post was a real surprise and touched me deeply. And Dutch, Chaplain, Nurse Cubby, and Gramma, thank you for serenading me with your quartet rendition of 'Happy Birthday,' sung into my voice mail during your layover at the airport in New York! So sorry I missed your call. (But this way I get to hear your singing over and over again! I didn't delete it.) It was great to see all your smiling faces in the photo and to read about your sight-seeing and cooking adventures. I can see you're having a terrific time, and I'm there with you in spirit. Love to all, from Aletheia
