The students were vibrating with excitement on the bus ride between our apartments in Athens and the port of Piraeus (peer-EH-us) as the sun went down Friday night. It's an eight or nine-hour ferry ride to Crete, so they booked us on an overnight passage. We approached the ferry, and I was amazed at how huge it was. They were loading semi trucks into it! You can select from several different classes of seating on a ferry. The most expensive is a cabin with a bed and a shower. Less expensive is an airplane seat. The cheapest is to lay out your blanket on the floor and hope at some point it gets quiet enough and dark enough to sleep. I wholeheartedly recommend springing for the cabin. I had comfort, privacy, and a great sleep, which was important because Saturday morning we started early and went for hours and hours.
