After checking room prices in the region and realizing, they would shamelessly eat up our budget, we decided to crash in our rental car. And you know what? Not so bad! It was warm, we went to sleep in the most picturesque locations and we could always find bathrooms closeby too. Here's a thing- unexpectedly the US westcoast has a clever system of free public bathrooms, all of them always equipped with paper, soap and towels.
But back to our road... Travel pages recommend to sleep in your car only in safe, well lit, preferrably residential areas. And so we did: welcome to Sausalito. We had "a room" with view over San Francisco bay, at least when we went to sleep. In the morning the entire area is fog. Every morning. But that also meant, that the nearby redwoods would look even more mystical... And the hidden small bay with surfers was even more beautiful.
After a proper American Breakfast we headed up north to wine heaven aka Napa Valley. And what a day it was! Thank you dear friends for the tip!
The fog has all cleared up and temperature rose to as much as 39 degrees. We drove through the valley with winyards on both sides, had cold Pino Grigio accompanied by a life band at one of the wineries, bathed in lake Berryessa and in the end chose one of the small towns as our place for the night. Also we met some other tourists- Linda, Greg and Mike at the Berlinger winery and they recommended us a few places on the road to LA. Also they gave us a valuable tip, which I'd like to pass forward: When driving south over Golden Gate bridge, you need to pay toll. But there are no stations. You need to prepay online, otherwise it will cost you. 491 USD to be exact. Ouch. Luckily we knew.
One unfortunate event of the day was however the parking ticket we got on a half empty parking lot by the lake. Turns out the faded, worn out red line meant "fire lane" and as the ticket was written by the time we got to the car, nothing could be done... Oh well. But was anyhow sooo worth it!
We finished up our day in downtown Napa with an outdoor movie (nevermind it was an animated one, psst ;)). And as we both felt we are not done with San Fran quite yet, this is our direction tomorrow morning.
