Danger ahead : Flowers !

the giving of flowers is a serious business in Estonia since there are several rules and superstitions you should consider if you don't want to offend.

First of all, the total number of stems must always be odd. Even numbers are reserved for the dead.
Only use red roses for your lover, and remember that white flowers represent death.
Blue flowers are very popular among the Russian speaking population, but take care with yellow flowers as they represent jealousy. This superstition comes from the Middle Ages, when yellow was the colour of dresses worn by ladies of a questionable nature. And be very careful with red carnations, as they remind some people of the Soviet times.
Lilies are good for showing respect, and orchids for wishing longevity and strength...

I think I better stick to giving chocolates, so far nobody has complained...
