Where I stayed
Arrived in Kains (As the locals pronounce it) at 4:30 in the morning, got checked into our hostel, fell asleep on the couches for a few hours, got sorted on our rooms and started planning the next 3 weeks properly, organisation!!! Booked the Whitsunday Islands, Fraser Islands and a hop on hop bus from Cairns to Byron bay. Walked around Cairns, and sussed out the place, its pretty small and pretty touristy. Its a bit warmer than it currently is but not as hot as it was in Perth around Australia day. Had dinner that night and had an early night!
Woke up at 9, slept really well, had breakfast and walked down town and booked a boat trip of the Great Barrier Reef for tomorrow, laid on the grass by the esplanade until 4, went home played cards, had pizza for dinner and watched Inception in the hostel
Went to the Great Barrier Reef, We were up at 6:30 and headed down to the port and boarded the boat head out to the reef, we had breakfast on the boat followed by the debrief by the crew and off we set, it took two hours to get out to the reef and the water was so smooth and the weather was terrific. We then snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef for a couple of hours, getting to see Nemo, and a few menacing looking but friendly reef sharks!! The reef was pretty cool but some of the reef's in Fiji were as good if not better.
Following that we had lunch on the boat, and went over to visit Green island which was beside our snorkel site, we stayed there for an hour, relaxed and then headed back out to the snorkel site and snorkelled for another hour. We then sailed back to port, got showered, had food and then went down town to visit a college buddy who is up from Sydney!
Today we visited the village of Kuranda, we got a bus to the edge of the rainforest and then got a 50 minute cable car ride up above the rainforest to Kuranda stopping off along the way to visit a waterfall and view some scenery. After that we walked around the village and the markets, then got the bus back to Cairns where we relaxed on the grass by the esplanade for a few hours, made our way back to the hostel and got ready for a night bus to Airlie Beach!
Roll on the Whitsunday Islands!
