Where I stayed
Arrived into Merida around 10 am, as is typical with Venezuela, the bus left a little late and arrived an hour late. We were met at the bus terminal by Dietar, the Posada owner. We then shared a taxi with a Polish couple to his posada and chilled there for a few hours. We then went and visited an ice cream parlour with the worlds biggest selection of ice-ream with over 900 flavours!! They had everything from your conventional vanilla and chocolate chip to your less conventional garlic, cheese and beer flavoured ice-creams!! We then went and visited the worlds largest cable car which was closed for renovations. After that we walked around some markets, chatted with a few tour operators about Paragliding, Canyoning and Zip lining. We then headed back to the Posada, had food and tore into a bottle of the local rum in the company of four Polish and a funny Hong Kong guy called Barry who devoured a bottle of whiskey in about 35 minutes!
We were moving at a slower pace this morning due to the after effects of the rum! We walked around the city some more and chilled out. Booked Paragliding for the afternoon and then relaxed in the Posada until 2. We got picked up then and drove for an hour out to the paragliding base where we were met by an old man of about 90 with about 3 teeth who produced some strange red shots to 'settle our tummy', I necked it and it felt like molten lava going down!! We then drove 1000 metres up a mountain and hung around at the top for another hour waiting to take off. The view from up there was amazing and it was a beautiful view. We took off in time to watch the sunset behind the Andes mountain. It was a stunning trip, we were in the air for about 40 minutes, just as we were going to land, my pilot starting circling and as we were descending my stomach was in knots. The shot was definitely not working now! We got back to the Posada and went for dinner in an amazing restaurant around the corner which was as cheap as chips and had a few beers in their catacomb bar and made our way home after that!!
Up early and had breakfast and went down to book a canyoning trip. As it turned out we were not up early enough, so instead we booked a Zip lining trip for the afternoon. We grabbed lunch and then got picked up and went out Zip lining. It was pretty cool, it went through a forested area on the mountain looking out on the City of Merida. We then made our way back to the Posada, and had dinner and a few beers with an Aussie guy and two Slovenians. Afterwards we went down the town and had a couple of beers and made our way back home early as we had a 6:30 start, Bogota is calling our name!!!
