The gift of sickness. I think sickness hits us all. Everyone that has gone over seas ends up sick some way or another. I have in every way embraced this malady. The gifts sickness gave me....projectile vomiting and diarrhea simultaneously, mind you! Oh blessed am I! SO I was forced to go to the hospital. Being an American, sick, loosing all body fluids, in a very hot climate, in a foreign land tends to make people a little jumpy. Well crazy is more concise. When you are feeling sick, waiting at the hospital for a doctor to tell you what you are already know, is the last place you want to be. I enter the hospital foyer and am immediately introduced to the director of the hospital in this exact manner..."This is Wyndi, she has diarrhea!" Which of course, the doctor responds, clapping his hands, with way too much enthusiasm for my taste, yelling, "Yeah, you have diarrhea!" I thought to myself, "Only in Southeast Asia, and only to me!"

Ignorance is not always bliss...

I had to fill out medical forms, which of course where not in English. I was asked what was my religion. I, of course, responded with "Christian". At that moment, I unknowingly sealed my fate. I later questioned one of my peers as to why they would have asked me such a question. She told me that some medicines they prescribe have fat lard in them and it is against Muslim beliefs to ingest fat lard. I remember thinking to myself; I should have told them I was Muslim!!! Shouldn't it be against everyone's set of beliefs to ingest fat lard?! How sick is that? I hope this story will make you think twice next time you are asked to define your religion.

To the Exam Room...

I followed the doctor into a nearby room and was asked to lie down on the gurney. Dr. Marzuki took no vitals, no temp and asked very few questions. He prescribed me about 25 meds and sent me on my way but not before giving me one good slap on my tummy. And let me tell you it helped. And right after that I threw up again. I guess that is how they cure sickness in this country.
