Our time in Sigatoka was to be ‘for one night only’ so we settled down in the second hostel we came to. We got some very friendly treatment on our arrival and when the hostel’s travel rep suggested some options available to us, we agreed to go to the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park the following day and then head to Nadi, ready for our early morning flight the day after that, to Perth.

We reconn’d Sigatoka even taking a walk along the old river crossing. The road and rail bridge was damaged by a hurricane in 1994 and has obviously since totally collapsed. We grabbed a meal in Raj’s curry house, where we were treated to the restaurant all to ourselves. The closed curtains and the solitary light in the corner meant we could hardly see our food, let alone each other but the curries were all good.

The next day we strolled over the sand dunes which can get up to 50m high in some places. It didn’t start out too promising as most of the dunes were covered in grass and, surprisingly, we couldn’t see any further dunes?!

After about a half hour walk though, we were amongst a number of massive sand piles. We marched about and had some fun trying to run up the mounds, replicating the famous ‘Travelator’ from the Gladiators. It was good fun playing like kids in the sand for a while before taking a coastal stroll back to the start of the walk. We had to navigate over some of the biggest driftwood we’ve ever seen, which had been washed ashore by some pretty ferocious waves.

Following this short stay we boarded another bus for our overnight stay in Nadi. Next real stop... Perth, Australia.
