What I did
Santa Marta, Tayrona National Park

Hola Family and Friends, it's been several weeks, sorry about that. I want to go back a bit and fill you in on our trip Northeast from Cartagena. We went up to Santa Marta Department (like a county in the US) which stretches from the Caribbean to the North, Venezuela to the East and the glaciated peaks to the South. In other words, awesome beaches, jungle, surrounded by dry hills of agave and cactus with snowy peaks in the distance. Oh, and laid back people -- a great place to visit.

We took a shuttle bus from Cartagena to Yuluka Ecohostel, 1k from the entrance to Tayrona National Park. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, we were greeted by a warm family that has built a series of bungalows into the steep mountainside, utilized boulders and the topography to it's advantage. Some of the rooms, literally had boulders inside that served as shelves.

A large Colombian-American contingent that had just completed a wedding were leaving but the girls got to play with some of the kids in the pool and check out the pet tortoises and surrounding jungle

We ate all of our meals there, which were excellent, and visited with fellow travelers. The highlight of our stay though was a day trip into the Tayrona.

We originally thought that we would spend a night in the park in hammocks for a few $, but decided against it. Check out the pics to see why it was a great decision.

The hike was all day and beautiful. The end of the "rainbow" for our hiking efforts was fresh made orange juice, Ceviche, and Arepa's (corn-based goodies filled with cheese and meats)

The next day we took the public bus to Santa Marta, claimed to be the oldest city in all of the Americas. We found a good hostel and had a great dinner out at a fancy place before catching a flight to Bogota. We elected for the flight because the bus trip was 12 hours and we weren't ready for another one.

A Bogota update is next.
