Our stop in Taupo was just overnight, a town with a big lake with supposedly the best trout fishing in the world. We convinced dad to try fly fishing. Dad has never fly fished before (he is strictly a lake and ocean fisherman) but it seemed to be a place to try it. Julius came along to keep him company.
They hired a nice young guide from the town but the weather did not agree. It rained for much of the time and the water was freezing cold. Hip waders didn't insulate. To make matters worse, the fish weren't biting and dad managed to get a hook in the nose! On well. I think Julius has sworn of fly fishing. Next time they will stick to fishing the lake instead of the river. At least you don't have to get in the water.
Mom and I went to a hot mineral springs resort next door to our campervan park where we soaked in some mildly hot and very hot pools. Mom said it reminded her when she was young and grandpa used to take the family to hot spring spas. He died at 96 so it must do some good. It rained on us a while but we didn't mind. We were good and pruned by the time we had to get out.
When we met back up at the campervan park we loaded up the van and drove the hour and a half to Rotorua. Along the way we stopped at Huka Falls, kind of a flat waterfall that looks like every kayaker's nightmare. While I didn't see any reports of kayaker's failed attempts, there is an interesting story of a local cricket umpire who met a somewhat embarrassing end there.
