Our overnight bus ride from Rovinj to Split was probably one of our scariest so far. Buses in Croatia are incredibly safe with two drivers and frequent stops. However, a big wind storm had swept through the country and we were going through the windiest parts. When we first went to buy tickets we were told that the bus ride was canceled. This would have been big problem for us as we are catching a ferry the next day to Italy, so we were relieved when they changed their mind.

The worst part of the trip were the hundreds of miles that ran along the coast, on high cliffs that went down to the ocean. We sat in the front and tried not to worry. We were reassured by our drivers' concentrated driving and frequent phone calls to make sure the roads ahead were ok. We were very glad to see Split in the morning.

It seemed that the winter season had caught up to the city and the weather this time was cold and rainy. Since we had already seen the city we spent much of the day in cafes, internet cafes and restaurants. We managed to squirrel away the time until our ferry left at 9pm.

When we got back on the ferry we met a guy who had ridden the ferry with us to Split the month before. We had just said hi to him the time before but when he saw me this time he said (this is my loose interpretation of his Croatian) "Hey! I remember you! You rode the ferry last month. You were with a black guy, right?" At that point Julius came around the corner and he said "That's him!" So, we had an acquaintance who became a friend and later when we were spending our last Kunas in the bar he came by and brought some beers for us. It turns out that he is a truck driver who uses this ferry frequently to take his truck across to Italy and the rest of Europe. He knew about as much English as we knew Croatian but we managed to chat a bit about driving standards in different counties and what we thought of his country.

The woman checking us in upgraded us this time so we could share a room and not be in the bowels of the ship. When we went to bed at 2 am, 7 am came much too early. Good thing Julius is a light sleeper because I did not hear anything when they came to wake us up.
