I was up at the crack of dawn just to get out of that bedroom so I was able to chat with the kids on their way to school and the housegirls who are up sweeping the yard. One may think that sweeping a dirt yard is a moot point but it actually does make a big difference. They also start the fires (all cooking is done on the fire) and sweep the house.
My cold wasn't improving but the goodness is that Tanga is known for its laid back living and we didn't have much to do than chatting under the shade and dosing. Nothing is done between noon and 3, the hottest time of the day. I can't even take a shower (open roof stall) then because the sun will torch my skin in those 10 minutes.
After three we drove downtown and went to the market, buying enough pilau ingredients to feed the whole neighborhood. I also bought spices for home and cold medicine. I looked for one with sudafed-like ingredients. The guy working their said it would make me dizzy and sleepy so to only take one. Before bed I took two. At the same time the heat lifted a bit and the freezer managed to freeze some water bottles. The room was probably in the high 70's but I put the fan right against the mosquito net, blowing at my face Julius thinks that I might as well just inject the flu virus right into my bloodstream if I am going to do that. Tanzanians are really leary of strong fans when you are sleeping or drinking cold things in hot weather. I don't buy it so I kept the fan there. With those two sudafed on board I slept great! Thank God for drugs.
