I took the longer, scenic route to Cape Town along the coast from Durban, two full days in the tourist Baz Bus, starting early and ending late each day. The Transkei was pretty in the rain, with its pastel houses against the green hills, and we swept past Nelson Mandela's home.
I stayed with Rick in Simon's Town in a house with an amazing view over False Bay, and a trail leading from the back garden straight up the mountain. There are penguins nearby, holding their own against humans and dogs. I went downtown to the Waterfront and the District Six Museum, one day we walked on Table Mountain, and another day I walked all the way to the end of the Cape, first up along the ridge and then down along the road for the last 20 km. It was satisfying to arrive at the end of the continent and look beyond.
