Ericah says: "At break we ask the children, 'Who has nothing to eat?' Now they are no longer shy, almost half of them raise their hands. We say, 'If you have eaten in the morning, and you have something to eat now, please be kind and share.' And they do.
"When the bell rings at the end of recess a flock of crows used to descend every day. They knew the time. You know how children can just drop pieces of bread and what-not. Now the crows no longer come.
"Formerly we used to give food to those who had nothing to eat, but now we cannot. At break many of the teachers are now eating samp [a form of cracked maize, the implication being that bread is now too expensive].
"One of the staff has to take two [shared] taxis to get to work from the high-density suburbs, which costs $300 per ride or $1200 per day or $6000 per week. This is almost all of what she earns. She is working for charity."
