We made the short drive to Gulf Port this afternoon. It took about an hour. After grabbing a bite to eat, we headed down to the Gulf. The pictures don't even begin to describe what we saw. It is unbelievable that after more than 6 months the place is still such a mess. More than the mess is the absence of so many buildings, replaced only by the foundation they were built on. All along the coast 'For Sale' signs lined up. I'm sure there are probably some great deals on waterfront property. But, it will be years before this area will again be a popular destination. The beach is void of any people and although there are many signs of popular restaurants, they are accompanied by an empty slab. I had never been to this area before and didn't know what it looked like pre-Katrina, so it was difficult to get a clear perspective. All I could think about is what if a storm like this were to hit the coast of south Florida. It is hard to imagine.

Our purpose in coming to this area was two-fold. We wanted to see(and the boys to see) the effects of a major hurricane. But, we also wanted to spend a day helping to clean up. Unfortunately, after making numerous calls to different churches and ministries we were turned down because the boys weren't old enough. You had to be at least 18 to help for liability reasons. Disappointing, but we tried.

The park we stayed at was right off I-10, so it will be an easy drive to our next stop, Louisiana!
