Our first day in Tarpon Springs, FL!
Entry 2 of 241 | show all | print this entry |
Hello from Tarpon Springs, FL! It's a beautiful sunny day for a boat ride...come along with us! We started out our day down at the sponge docks where all the fishing boats, boat tours, souvenir shops and great Greek restaurants and bakeries are.
We left at noon for a 1 hour plus tour down the river and out to the Gulf of Mexico to learn and see. The boys took their binoculars and saw Osprey and Bald Eagle nests, mangrove islands, a historic lighthouse, migratory birds, and learned about the Greeks settling the town in the early 1900's when they discovered Tarpon Springs was rich in sponges.
Next we set out on the sponge diving boat. We learned about the different grades of sponges and that they've been used for bathing people and cars, painting, insulation, and decoration. The captain let the boys try on the heavy dive helmet. Travis, the sponge diver, jumped overboard and showed us how they search for sponge, pull it up with a small rake, and then put it in their cage. Keegan and Collin learned that if the divers leave some of the sponge base attached they will grow back. Did you know that they are animals not plants?
After leaving historic Tarpon Springs, we head up 19 north an hour and a half for Homosassa Springs.
Arrival: 6:30 pm Nature's Resort in Homosassa, FL
