    Well it has been a long time coming but we finally are off to Greece.  We had planned a trip to Greece in 2007 when Pfizer closed the Ann Arbor site so our trip had to be postponed.  Our good friend Jim has come for a visit and during his stay we joined up with Beth and Adam and the five of us were on EasyJet and off to Athens for a long weekend.  Upon landing in Athens airport we hopped on the metro and were off to our apartment in downtown Athens.  The metro in Athens was finished for the Olympics in 2004 and part of it is relatively new.  This is the cleanest subway and subway stations we have ever been in.  After getting to our stop Kim's quick map navigations had us on our way to our apartment.  We checked in and were just amazed not only by how nice the apartment was but of the amazing view of the Acropolis from our veranda.    Upon check in to the apartment there was a very nice gift basket with all kinds of lovely treats including a bottle of red wine.  The timing was perfect to open the bottle and enjoy our first views of Athens.   The Athenians eat dinner late but it was near midnight and we were all starving.  We walked down the street to a restaurant that was recommended by the apartment owner.  We had a feast of a dinner.   After a well needed night of sleep we were off to the Acropolis for a close up view.  The metro took us close by and then a short walk up the Acropolis with ruins to see the whole way up. What a trill to see the Parthenon close up.  This is a day I have been dreaming about most of my life. They no longer let people walk inside plus there is a major rebuilding project under way.  Our admiration had to be done from several feet away but it was still magical to just be that close to this iconic structure.  After leaving the Acropolis, we headed down to the Plaka section of Athens.  The Plaka is the oldest section of Athens.  Most of its streets have been closed to automobiles and is now best know for its dinning and shopping.  We wandered around until we found a very nice restaurant were we had lunch. The food is just amazing.  The produce is so ripe and full of flavors.  After lunch we had a walk through the gardens and then back to the apartment for a rest.  Friday night's dinner was a item I was dying to try.  Souvlaki, and not that crap Gyro we have in the states but the real deal.  The apartment owner had recommended a souvlaki stand down the street.  We were off.  My mouth was watering more and more the closer we got.  Here is a description of souvlaki "It is usually meat of some sort, beef, lamb, pork or 'unknown' that is on a giant vertical rotisserie. The souvlaki 'cook' slices off the meat as it becomes done and puts it on a round pita bread with lettuce, tomato, onions, and sadziki, a cucumber-yogurt-garlic sauce". We had pork souvlaki and man was it good.  I had to go in for a second and I am glad I did.
