We had always said that if we ever found ourselves back in France we would make every effort to re-visit the Normandy area. So, here we are, back in France. We had originally thought about renting a car and making a day trip out on our own. I quickly discovered that this would take too much time and we wouldn't really know where to go or what to see once we got to Normandy. We also had no desire to take another 'big bus' tour.
My web 'research' led me to a company called Overlord tours. They offered small, personalized tours. We would need to take the train from Paris to Bayeux, a trip of just over 2 hours. Feeling fairly confident in our ability to travel 'independently' we hopped on the train, managed a change of trains in Caen and were met by our guide, William, at just after 9 am. We would spend all day, just the six of us and William, taking in as many of the sites as possible. Unlike our previous' big bus' tour we had William all to ourselves and were able to go to a lot of the sites that the larger vehicles can't access. William, a student of the events that happened here, also had lots of knowledge to share that we wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Everything from stories told by his grandmother of 2 paratroopers knocking on her door asking for directions to incidents shared by veterans he has led on tours!
I think I can safely speak for our entire group that this trip to Normandy was the high light of our trip. Nothing I can share with you, words or pictures, can replace the experience of walking the beaches our troops did back in 1944 and experiencing that history first hand. Ken and I are already talking about a return visit at some point in the future. We will spend time in Normandy and give the area the time and attention it deserves - Paris will just have to wait!
