Today found us hopping in the car for a drive north to Hyde Park.  First stop was the FDR home and Presidential Library.  The home was actually owned by FDR's mother and was left to the NPS at her death.  FDR and Eleanor, along with their children would live here but would have to abide by  his mother's rules. Also located on the property is the FDR Presidential Library.  It is currently being renovated with plans to re-open next year.  We were able to get inside and see the exhibits though.

Because the home was owned by FDR's mother both FDR and Eleanor built cottages on the property to escape to.  We visited the one Eleanor spent time in. It is entirely different from the family home and is quite inviting and cosy.

Located about two miles north of the Roosevelt property is the Vanderbilt Mansion. The home, used only for a few weeks in the Spring & Fall, belonged to Frederick William Vanderbilt; grandson of the Commodore.  Built in a grand scale with classical ornamentation, it is completely different from the home of the Roosevelt's.   It too, is owned by the National Park service and tours are given several times a day.
