The island is located just off of Lubec, Maine, about 40 miles via road from where we are staying. After getting through customs and a stop at the visitor center we headed for the FDR cottage - a term we are learning the wealthy use in a different way from us working stiffs! We were surprised to learn that FDR spent most of his childhood summers here. In fact, his family had a 'cottage' here from the time he was just one year old. As an adult he would continue to visit here and would buy the cottage that you are now able to tour after he was married.
He would continue to spend summers here with his wife and children. It is here that he came down with polio and he had to be physically carried from the island. As his career in politics picked up his opportunities to visit would diminish. Because of the polio he would also would spend more and more time in Warm Springs, Georgia taking in the waters. His last visit here would be a short one in 1939.
The island contains a few small villages along with some summer homes of the wealthy. There is also a lighthouse - sister to the one at Quoddy Head. This one is visible from the island but only accessible during low tide, something we are already planning on coming back for!
