This has been an unusual year for us.  Normally we like to travel about 200 miles, set up camp and hang out for a week or so. After the week we head out in the coach for another 200 miles and repeat the same pattern.  This year has not been like that at all.

After spending a great 9 days with my folks we had to head out for South Dakota.  You see, this is our State of residence and they have changed the format on their drivers licenses.  So rather than being able to re-new by mail we have to go to an office and have a new picture taken.

The distance from Chewelah to Rapid City, SD is just over 900 miles.  I had given us three days in which to cover this distance.  My first 'plan' was to split the drive up into three, 300 mile days.  But, the more I thought about this the more I wavered.  You see, our route would take us right through Livingston, Montana which is the Northern gateway to Yellowstone National Park.

Desperately wanting to see 'something new' we decided to make two 450 mile drive days so that we could have one full day in which to visit the Northern section of the park.  Ken & I, along with the kids, had visited Yellowstone back in 1995 but we didn't make it to the Northern end of the park so this was indeed something 'new' for us!  It ended up being a great day and well worth the two long drive days.

Oh, in case you are wondering why the rush to get to South Dakota....we had no idea how the whole drivers license renewal would go and wanted to allow enough time to accomplish this process if we ran into a snafu!  The other issue is that Labor Day weekend is coming and I had made reservations at the only 'membership' campground in the state ( as well as the only one in the entire geograpic region ) In our years of fulltiming the only difficulty we have had getting into a campground has been around the three long weekends over the summer so I've learned to be very organized and I get my reservations in the first day I can.  We are headed from South Dakota to my sisters place in Eastern Iowa and, quite frankly, there isn't much between here and there so this was the best place to 'land' for a few weeks!  Besides, there are things here that we haven't seen yet!
