Feeling fairly confident that this would be a simple process we pulled into the very short line to cross into the U.S. From here things went completely haywire. I won't bore you with all the details. Suffice it to say that Ken was made to go through the truck side of customs. I wasn't allowed to stay with him - some rule about only one person being allowed in the vehicle on the truck side. While Ken was dealing with what he calls complete incompetence and bureacracy at it's worse, I was standing on the side of the road under a blazing Texas sun - for almost 3 hours!!
Now, most of you expressed some concern about us traveling south of the border. It's very easy to buy into the media hype about all the violence and 'evil doings' - we know better! We had not one problem or instance of feeling uncomforable in our weeks south of the border. The ONLY problem we had was dealing with our own customs officials. It's not that they were rude it is more that they were indifferent and, well, let's just call it power hungry. Think of it as having to deal with the TSA folks at the airport multiplied by about 100. Very frustrating and, quite frankly, embarassing knowing that if they are treating their citizens this way they must be doing the same thing to 'visitors' to the USA.
So, a process that should have taken 30 minutes at most took almost 3 hours. Once cleared from US Customs we drove another 150 miles before arriving in Uvalde, Texas where we will spend the next couple of days before once again heading north.
