If it had been up to me we probably would've never left Boca Beach and I'm fairly sure I could have convinced Ken to stay as well.  But we are traveling with friends and the group had plans to move on.

The campground we are staying at here in Jocotapec is one that our friends Henk & Betsy have been staying at for the last several years.  In fact, they lived in this area for 3 years prior to purchasing an RV and hitting the road as fulltimers.  They now come back for several months every year.  The area, located about an hours drive south of Guadalajara is a popular destination with 'gringos' and during the season has over 5,000 residents from points north of the border.   ( the season roughly matches the U.S. snowbird season)  There are a string of small villages here, all located along the shores of Lake Chapala, which is Mexico's largest lake and a popular weekend destination.  You can rent houses for anywhere from $500 to over $900 a month. For this you can get 3,000 sq. ft. A maid and a gardner costs 45 pesos per week and a maid was 200 pesos a month for 4 hours a week (thats $4 a week at current rates.

The living is easy and inexpensive here.  We've settled into a beautiful campsite with full hookups including wi-fi for 1200 pesos a week - which works out to about 13 dollars a night.  I am sure the monthly rate is even cheaper!  Our early impressions of the area are that despite it's heavy 'gringo' concentration it has still maintained it's Mexican identity.  There are no fast food restaurants here or chains. The local Soriano grocery store does play Frank Sinatra over the pa system and the place is crawling with people who look just like us but, strangely, we aren't put off by it!  Probably because they are visitors like us and not tourists!
