The fishing village of San Blas was a major port from the late 16th century into the 19th century.  Ships involved in the Manila trade routinely stopped here.  During the mid-18th century San Blas also became a shipbuilding center and was a garrison for the Spanish armada which fought French, Dutch and British pirates.

Not much remains in San Blas nowadays and the main 'tourist' draw is a jungle trip aboard a small boat on the waters of the La Tovara River, which is one reason for our stopping here. The other is that San Blas is about half way between Mazatlan and Puerto Vallerta - our next stop.
