The distance from Longmont to Amarillo is just about 480 miles. We can go that far in a day but given the choice would prefer not to. So, we found a Colorado State Park in the town of Trinidad. It was just a short distance off the highway and it proved to be a good half way 'stopping' point.
Day two of our southbound journey found us traveling through a portion of New Mexico as well as the Texas panhandle. I have just finished reading a fascinating book titled ' The Worst Hard Time' written by Timothy Egan. ( Ken is currently half way through ) This book is about the people who survived the Dust Bowl of the 'Dirty 30's'. When I bought the book I had no idea we would be traveling through the heart of the area it is written about. Needless to say we both viewed the area with 'new eyes'.
So, now we are set up in Amarillo. We aren't the only 'early Beavers' and the sun is indeed shining. It is always surprising how much the return of something makes you realize how much you need it! With that said, I'm heading outside to my neglected lounge chair with a good book in hand! Ken is already out golfing, I think he missed the sun even more than me!
As a side note, the campground we are staying at has a 3 day special, pay for two and get the third free. It came to $13.33 a night. Thats a nice cement pad, wide spaces with 50 amp. Plus, if you call now, oh wait thats a TV commercial. They allow you to wash the coach (that means Ken with a little help) and the whole thing includes free laundry. The Spa is just an added bonus.
