We were up with the dawn, in fact we may have beaten the actual sun rising over the horizon by a few minutes. I am not a morning person so found this a bit traumatic but I knew it was a sound plan to void the hot sweaty, faint, unwell feeling later.

The cycle was about 56km to Waipara and uneventful. We arrive to discover Waipara isn't so much a place as a little collection of buildings hugging a road junction, which luckily included a tearooms even if they were beside some full scale road works.

We visited the tea rooms which included; me being thrown by a build your own breakfast menu, a ice cream each and a conversation that included the owner suggesting I become a ski bunny (as with many jobs I don't think I have the correct experience or clothes).

We then had a afternoon snooze under a bridge, not because the man at 'National park' had recommended it but because it was shady and the river ,as most rivers are in this area, was almost dry. We were killing time until our train at 5.25pm.

Once we dusted ourselves of, pulled our bikes upright, sweated to the train station, wondered where the rest of the train station was it being only about 1 carriage long, it was time for the train (most of which predictably did not fit on the platform).

The train sped us the 58km into Christchurch avoiding the suburbs, getting lost and other nasty mishaps. We then managed to disembark and find the hostel with only one or two wrong turns.
