The Glow worms of Waitomo Caves
Monday 1st September
First thing in the morning we made our way over to Waitomo and arrived first in the queue for a tour of the caves. They were extremely beautiful and the largest cavern known as the cathedral has played host to famous Kiwi singers such as Kiri Te Kanawa. The highlight though was seeing huge numbers of glow worms, larvae that turn into mosquito like insects without mouthparts, on a boat trip within the caves. They were so numerous in parts that they actually lit the cave enough to see faintly through the inky darkness.
After returning to Otorohanga we had a good look around the Kiwi house there and the saw loads of native wildlife in the adjoining bird and wildlife park. We then made our way over to Rotorua and met Ruths ma and pa, Florence and Phil and what a lovely and amazing couple they were. They both have an all consuming hobby of making films and have won many awards over the years. They go by the name of PhilM Productions and if you would like to see there handywork, check out Utube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXTxqpxdksE . Florence cooked us a lovely meal and we were early to bed.
