On the 16th we moved to another part of the island Haad Yao, Shirelea Backackers. Bungalow huts, beach 5mins walk an a lovely chilled atmosphere.
Lots of gorge food, beers and chilling on Thai matts watching movie after movie! Sitting on the veranda of our bungalow relaxing after the Full Moon Party. So the Full Moon Party where do we start with that. Well this is how it happens for about a week or so before the traditional full moon party people start flocking to Koh Phangan island. The first parties back in the eighties were all about freedom to do what you liked; read take what you liked. Now with the heavy Police presence, heightened further with mainland draftings since last months stabbing of a British tourist, the drug availability is reduced.
However that doesnt deter thousands of holiday makers of all ages, but especially young college and uni students flocking to Haad Rin Nai, sunrise beach. Understanding once the cheap mini buckets of alcohol are unleashed, the most famous being the Sam Sung bucket with lemonade and the infamous Red Bull, things get a little messy. Music is pumped out from DJ booths and bars all along the beach and the town of Haad Rin. The vast majority of people are there for just a good time and seeing some many thousands of people all dancing with very few incidents is a good thing. The state that the beach is left in afterwards certainly isnt. It was a fun evening for the Rhodesies starting at 7.30pm ish who took it steadily all night, Clare set the dance floor (our 2.5 feet of beach anyway) alight and probably managed about 8 buckets!. We managed to make it through to watch the sunrise expose the many 'bodies' that lay strewn from one end of the beach to the other made it back to our resort about 9.30am in need of a large brekfast and a sleep. Maybe we are getting old but I dont think we will be rushing back in 28 days time for the next full moon party!
