Crossing the Border to Lao
A short walk from the guethouse to immigration, another stamp for the passport. Woot! Then across the small Mekong! River to the Laos border control for queuing visa buying and anther stamp. Big one this time! After and hr or so all sorted and we decide to separate from the girls Connie and Frankie as we decide to go North and they want to go South and get to Vietnem. Very sad but you never know we may bump into them on the way back down. We share a minibus with some other foreign travelers to Lungnamtha (north Lao) and hook up with some others to find a guesthouse. We bump into some of the guys from our guesthouse in Chiang Mai which is great. You seem to be playing catch up with people you have previously met which is really cool.
The road up north was very steep and windy making me feel rather sick but the views were amazing. Although along the way the locals are slashing and burning the sides of mountains, to make way for crop growing so the land looks patchy and smoky. It's a shame Lao is a little more expensive than we thought when you compare it to Thailand but hey we just have to becareful although we eat out at a nice restaurant and I have home made chips which I haven't had for ages. Crisp update: last 2 weeks, 2 packets! More thumbnails ...
