Where I stayed
Very like Paraty but less twee. Long straight roads lined with trees. Good shops (see pic of Sue in her new woolly wrap thingy – essential for colder climes and worthy of a posh Northumbrian dress shop (Jean)…or so she tells me). Great for viewing sunset across the River Plata (or Plate as we know it). We were told that Plata means silver and refers to the shimmering waters or the coins that were shipped in by the Spanish. Looking at the dull, brown waters of the river we favour the second explanation.
In the evening we were surprised by another local carnival competion. Only two samba groups this time and both offering the traditional carnival format. Really very good especially as it was free and unexpected. The first group had a large, scantily clad, sexy samba dancer who returned later to dance at the front of the crowd … inexplicably she was now definitely a bloke! Stayed till after midnight watching a samba band set up. It took over an hour and we all expected it to be worth the wait… till the first bar – it wasn't. But we were treated to a fine display of Uruguayan sound checking. In bed by 12.15.
We liked Colonia and Sue has added it to the (long) list of places where we are going to buy a house, settle down and while away our retirement.
