Left Ilha Grande by boat at 10am by public bus along the green coast to Paraty. Hot and sticky and weather breaking after the storm we had but our new Pousada (B&B) in Paraty is really nice. Paraty is an old colonial town, virtually abandoned for a century before being rediscovered in the 50s.  The old town is picture postcard perfect, very little traffic, donkeys, cards and surprisingly few people (check out the empty streets in photos).  Main reason for this may be the streets made of boulders which flood at high tide by design.  Intended to keep the place clean but very challenging for people with sore ankles, amateur bike riders, women with high heels and flipflops in the rain.

The whole place has a lovely atmosphere, great to chill out and have a few beers.  And then the heavens opened and boy do they open. Forced to invest in a couple of brollies and retreat to the pousada.

Geoff has had a minor setback with an allergic reaction to mosi bites, ankles the size of a small elephant.  Our beautiful Gigi turned out to be an effective queue handler in the local health centre and made the throngs of Paraty residents line up meekly behind Geoff (well he was there first!).  He's on antibiotics and off the booze so in our party of 6 that leaves only me as the sole drinker! You couldn't make it up.

Other things we did in Paraty:-

        -  World famous puppet show -Grupo contadores de estorias.  C’mon I’m sure you’ll all remember them!  Written up in Le Monde as " le public a ete etonne" as we were too!

       -  Two hour bike ride past beach, through swamp and dicing with death along Brazilian highway

        -  Casa de Cultura, a beautifully laid out history lesson of Paraty and its people

-         -   Visit to hospital waiting room, a must for any tourist visiting Paraty including the world famous "Jump that queue” family game best played by old grannies
