So nine and a half weeks in South America starting this Tuesday...and all the gory details will be relaid to you via this blog.  Really looking forward to walking out of the airport buildings in Rio on Wednesday where it is currently 30C and not raining.  There's something I don't quite understand about a February day that is so hot and so dry.  Sue and I are going to try and keep you up to date as we travel around South America before we meet up with our daughter in Colombia - TACA airlines, our travel plans and FARC permitting.  Also hoping that RBS play their part....they have been told where we are going but I bet they still stop our bank cards somewhere along the way.  We hate banks!  So off to enjoy our last few hours in Blighty before we don our backpacks and put our lives in the care of Air France for the flight to Rio...

Just 24 hours before our journey starts now. All bags packed, repacked, unpacked, repacked with half the contents.   This trip represents a number of firsts for us...
- first time south of the equator
- first time on holiday for more than a month
- first time we have packed less underwear than days away
Expect we will come across a few more firsts before we fly home. Fingers crossed they will all be positives!

Buen suerte! I'll be following your travels with unseemly vicarious interest! Have a great time and bring me back a baby alpaca if you can find one. Enjoy grilled guinea pig, 64 oz steaks (not together) and 57 varieties of potato (all fried), not too mention chocolate, caiparinhas and Chilean merlot. Moi, jealous?? You could just tuck me in a corner of your backpack but I guess I'll have to make do with the travelpod. Love and safe travelling to you both!

Wow, some trip! I especially like the look of the far south bit, it should be tremendous down there. If, when you get to Lima, you realise the error of your ways in heading back northwards, just trade in the tickets and head west: floods and infernos guaranteed here for the intrepid tourist, plus of course a nice cup of tea.
I approve of your letting go of the underwear=days rule: it's amazing where you can tie a wahing line even in the poshest hotels. Our rule has evolved into underwear=3, regardless of the number of days!
Look forward to hearing of/seeing your travels.

Beleza! Your blog has just turned me into Gladys Knight, screeching 'It should've been me!' Rio's mad isn't it - did you have to lie on your back to get all of Christ in the viewfinder? Hope you're getting lots of meat and water to go with the chopps, churros and the odd ice cream, of course. Great to be kept up-to-date and see the shots (and read the hotel comments!). Dying to see what you make of Paraty and the rest. Snow's forecast here this morning, by the way. x
