Hi Everyone,

Drove out of Canterbury and onto Otago, scenery still stunning! We had a 6 hour drive to get to Dunedin so we had a couple of stops along the way and wanted to see the Moeraki Boulders. The car park is about 500 metres away from the boulders so you have to walk along the beach to get to them (not easy when the tide was coming in and the sea was quite rough), as you turn the final corner they come into sight and what a sight...

There are two explanations for the boulders, the Maori one and the Scientific one, think we prefer the Maori legend...

In Maori legend, the Kai-hinaki food baskets were washed ashore when a canoe was shipwrecked while searching for precious stones

The scientists say that the boulders are 60 million years old. They started as lime crystals, which then attracted other minerals around it to make the boulder shape.

Whatever the explanation they make for a really unusual and spectacular sight...

Will update from Dunedin soon,

Love Lisa and Paul x
