We arrived at hotel which turned out to be a lovely resort - booked using Tripadviser and a real bargain.  Sadly we have next to no time to spend there but still nice to have a break from the guesthouses.

We caught a tuk tuk into the heart of Chiang Rai (which is small) and organised a car and driver for all of the next day.  We then took the tuk tuk out to the (Silver Wat... I will add the details of this and the real name shortly - but very interesting and only 10 years old- an artists present to the King).

In the evening we went to the night market which had some lovely stuff and ended the night at a Thai restaurant that had a balcony overlooking the market (which had bands playing up one end).

Next morning the driver picked us up at 9am and we headed north towards the Laos border. We hired the driver because we wanted to go slowly (there is a 2 hour bus to the border if we wanted to go directly or if we were in a hurry).
We drove to Mae Sae which is the Thailand side of the Myanmer Border (Burma).

We left the driver and walked into Burma, paying the $20USD visa charge and had our passports stamped...

2 minutes over a bridge covering a small canal and we were now in Myanmer!
We got chatting with a local who walked with us around the town and took us up to a wat on top of the hill which is a replica of the famous one in Ragoon. (an ancient one, whereas this copy is quite young). Nothing too exciting in this little border town, we really needed a few hours so that we could have caught a taxi out to some of the villages to see what the real environment was like.  I suppose its a good and quick way for many tourists to renew their Thai visa if they are due to expire as on having our passport restamped to walk back into Thailand it reactivated our 30 day visa stay for Thailand again.

We found our driver again and continued on throught beautiful hilly scenery with little population.
He told us of a nearby, relatively new museum ,"Opium Musuem" build by the Kings family as an education facility for the locals and the school children in the area and beyond.  We decided to check it out and found a state of the art set up with the Museum built through a hill with the entry one side and working its way to the exit on the other side of the hill.  Lots of electonic and computerised displays showing the history and anything else youd want to know about the opium trade in the Golden Triangle.

At the Thai border of Chiang Kong where we left the driver for him to return to Chiang Rai.
We then drove on until we came to the famous Golden Triangle lookout spot where you can see all 3 counties sitting so closely together - very pretty too. We then stopped at a small town for a late lunch before finally arriving

We went though the Thai immigration checkpoint and then paid $2US to board a tiny boat to cross the river into Laos, arriving at about 5.30pm- 1/2 hour before it shuts.. just made it.  $32USD for Laos Visa and we're in! - too easy... funny really.

We check into the first guesthouse we pass as not too concerned where we sleep, as we leave at 8am tomorrow for our Gibbon Experience - 2 days living in a treehouse 250metres up with the only access into our house is by flying fox (zipwires!)... we are having strong doubts and dont know if we have the energy to enjoy the "thrill" of the experience and waiver back and forth but as we have to check in at the office before 7pm the night before we have no time to agonise over it and so decide to "bite the bullet" and do it..........??? - Yep we're on for tomorrow....
