We took it easy with a late start as we knew it would be an easy day, plus I wanted to drag out our last 2 days as much as possible. I wasnt ready for it to be over yet but at the same time excited to be going into the next part of our holiday.
We stopped the night 1/2 way down to Pokhara in a lovely guesthouse with fantastic views. An Aussie couple arrived late afternoon to stop for the night on their way up to Poon Hill. Nice night chatting - our last night on the trek! I have to add here so Rob doesnt abuse me - During the day I fell over 2 more times. - "Ok Rob - happy now that it's in the diary??" I didnt find it a problem falling over but it sure made Rob and Rame bond in their tutting at me and nagging at me....hee hee...
Tomorrows walk is famous but not for a good reason.. Ulleri down to NayaPul where we will catch a bus back to Pokhara is down down - 3280 steps of down (theyve been counted) Knee taping and supports here we come... The last day - Set off down.. yep sure was dooooowwwnnnnn. Id been worried about my right knee and had been going to the physio the last few weeks before leaving oz and doing exercises for it. (Ive had soreness in it since NZ Milford Track a few years ago). Well what do you know.. physio exsercises must really work! My right knee held up fantastic with no probs, but maybe I should have also down the exercises on the left knee???!!.. 1/2 way down it started to lock up but knew we were on the home stretch so it didnt matter. Gimpy knee or not - the trek would finish today.
We were just walking into the village of Birethani where we planned on a stop for lunch when a man on a mustang pony came galloping up behind us yelling 'namaste' (hello) - It was The Captain from Sunny Hotel! He was riding down to Pokhara (that horse had come down all those horrendously steep uneven steps with him on his back - amazing.) He spoke to Rame in Nepalese and galloped off ahead. Rame took off to follow him and we when we caught them up found that Rame had got his trusty medical kit out again for the Captain who had a cut on his head where he had run into some overhead bamboo while galloping the pony. When finished Rame went off to the restaurant kitchen for his dahl baht and the Captain sat and chatted to us. He told us he was on his way to Pokhara to meet with the India Ambassador. He would leave his horse and they would take a chopper back to Ghorepani where they were having a 'cutting of the ribbon' ceremony for new fresh drinking wells that have been constructed a all around Ghorepani as an India/Nepalese joint project. They would then fly by chopper back to Pokhara where the Captain would ride his mustang back up ... those steps..sigh..
The Captain also told us of a comittee he runs in Ghorepani to distribute donated money for medical needs in the area. The fund was started by a Dutch family after their daughter died in Ghorepani of asthma about 2 years ago. Well that was it... the Captain climbed on his horse and rode away and we finally made it down to Naya Pul and hitched a ride on a local bus for the 2 hour ride back to Pokhara - I was really really really tempted to ride on the bus roof but eventually told myself to act my age.... sad...hee hee. And incase any of you were worried..... Rob improved every step he took downwards into that warm warm air....
