Well, the answer is simple...
Yes, that's me...And YES, it HURT!
So, 2 plus years ago I was looking to get a new tattoo and started to do some research. I was looking for something that would go with the 2 celtic pieces I alread had but it had to have meaning. While researching I started thinking about my last trip to New Zealand and the Maori art that I saw there. I was really surprised at some of the similarities that existed between the two cultures. So I started researching the artwork and artists and came across Ben Te Hau.
More on Ben Te Hau
For two years I have been trying to get an appointment with Ben. First I was going to meet him in England at a tattoo convention but that fell through. Later I was going to meet with him in Spain but 6 weeks before my departure I got laid off from work so that fell through as well. It seemed the only way I was going to get an appointment with him was to show up at his studio. Ben is an extreemly talented artist, so much so that he has a 3 month wait so back last November I started making plans.
...and well, you've seen the results here and listed in the photo section above. I have to say, this is one of the most fantastic piece of body artwork I have ever seen. In addition to the beauty of the piece, every section of it has meaning to it. Some of the representation include my family and my relationship with them and up-bringing, my sisters (Lindsay and Lisa), my marriage to my lovely bride, close friends and friends lost...
There is much more to it but thats the quick version. Check out pics in the photo section for a few discriptions of some of the symbols. There will be more pics coming so check back again.
The session took roughly 7 hours, a good 5 and a half were spent under the needle. Ben did the entire piece free handed. For those of you who were wondering, YES, it hurt. It hurt Alot! But, it was so worth it I'd do it again today.
So there you have it. Thats why we returned to Sydney. We're here for another week to see Sydney Mardi Gras (you can imagin the pics that will come from that one) and let the arm heal up before we head off to Cairnes to dive the Great Barrier reef. After that, it's off to Sing... Sing... Singapore.
Until Mardi Gras...
